It all started in March, 2005. At least, that's when I think it started. I noticed then that I was having to blow my nose every night before going to sleep. I figured it was a sinus infection, and treated it with OTC meds. No big deal.
Later that September, I got a horrific cold. Couldn't taste or smell anything. Not even the red wine we were served at our monthly wine tasting. Not a good sign. But still, it was just congestion. That could be overcome.
I left for New Orleans in early October to do post-Katrina reconnaissance work. I was stuffed up, but nothing too serious. I wasn't concerned.
In November, I woke up with an awful sinus headache. That's when I decided it was time to see a doctor. The doc, a sub for my usual, gave me a 5-day antibiotic prescription and sent me on my way.
In December, I started coughing. Oh, if I had only known then what I know now! I went to my usual Doc, and she prescribed prednisone. It was just the thing for her "wheezers," me included.
The prednisone was marginally effective. My wheezing diminished, but not my cough, at least not in any meaningful way. I waited for improvement, but nothing happened. So back to the doctor I went. By now, though, my regular doc had retired from practice, and so I started a new adventure: How many docs and assistants could I talk to in how little time?
